Meet Ms. Universe 2007!

My name is Joan Lopez and I am a 54 year old WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) Pro competitive natural bodybuilder  My message is simple and clear, "Take the lid off your box and burst out - the only limits out there are the ones we impose on ourselves!"  

I saw the very first televised bodybuilding competition in 1979 while I was suffering from severe morning sickness with my first child.  I knew that I would be great at that sport and vowed that someday I would get my chance.  I had been a college gymnast and speed skater so I knew muscle development came fairly easy for me.  

Twenty-three years and three children later, I finally got my chance.  I walked into my very first gym and began training 3 days later.  I trained with sheer passion and intensity and six months later I was up on stage and won a 1st  and a 2nd place trophy.  The year was 2002.  I entered many competitions and received my Pro-card from the WNBF 3 years later in 2005.  I have been fortunate enough to have traveled the world competiting in my sport of choice.  

As a Pro competitor in my federation, there are not age divisions - we are all in the Open Division.  This past season, my hard work paid off and I won the title of  Ms Universe 2007 in the Cayman Islands. 

I feel like this has sport saved my life.  I was, and still consider myself a mom first and foremost.  I was 48 when I started and now I am 54.  I have not reached my peak yet - I am still improving and that is why I continue.  I believe that we as humans do not expect enough of ourselves.  We are much stronger physically and mentally than we actually realize.
